Everybody Loves A Happy Ending
Tears For Fears
founders Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith are
back together after 13 years.
In 1985, Tears For Fears delivered back-to-back hit
with "Everybody Wants To Rule the
World" (#1 US, #2 UK), "Shout" (#1 US, #4 UK), and "Head Over Heels"
(#3 US, #12 UK). from their second album, Songs
From The Big Chair.
The album spend 83
weeks
on the US chart (it was certified 5-times platinum by the RIAA)
and
81 weeks on the UK chart.
Tears For Fears
started 1981, when childhood
friends Orzabal
and Smith
(who grew up together in Bath, England) made
their first records with the ska band Graduate.
TFF took their
name from the teachings of Arthur Janov (whose primal scream theory
greatly influenced John Lennon). They released their first singles in
1982 ("Mad World," #3 UK) and '83 ("Change," #4 UK; and "Pale Shelter,"
#5 UK), all from their debut album, The
Hurting.
After the broad success of Songs From the Big Chair
and
the debilitating
world tour that followed (which included concerts to raise funds for
African
famine relief), Tears For Fears
took a long recess. They returned in
1989
with an amazing new single, Sowing
The Seeds Of Love
(#2 US, #5 UK)
and
the platinum album The Seeds Of Love (#1 UK, #8 US). The album included
Woman In Chains which
launched the career of guest vocalist Oleta Adams, who
was
singing at a Kansas City hotel lounge when Orzabal and Smith first
discovered
her during a TFF tour.
After Smith's departure in 1991 to pursue solo
projects, a
TFF 'greatest hits' collection was issued in '92 (Tears Roll Down).
Orzabal continued with Tears For Fears, releasing Elemental in 1993,
and Raoul And the Kings Of Spain in 1995, the final album until now.
Solo projects from Smith (1998's Mayfield, on his own Zero Disc
label)
and Orzabal (2001's Tomcats
Screaming Outside) have
kept them busy
until the time was right to reconvene Tears For
Fears.

Among
the benefits of picking up the new Tears for Fears album--the band's
first since 1989--maybe the least obvious is looking cool in front of
friends. Flick it on over cocktails, say, and brows will furrow: Few
would think to match the heaving, synth-heavy boys who lit up the '80s
with "Head Over Heels" to this new material. Which is mostly a good
thing. The vocals of lead singer Roland Orzabal, powered by some
all-cylinders thing, still squash all traces of irony in their path,
and there's a moodiness to the music, minus a lot of the old
broodiness, that borders on the masterly. Yet the sound has changed
completely. Old-school overproduction has fallen away in favor of real
guitars, pounding pianos, and a melody-driven, Beatle-y
sensibility. It's there on the title track and first single "Call Me
Mellow," and only slightly eclipsed by something pleasantly Bacharach-ish
on "Secret World." Everybody who loves a happy ending will find one
here: Tears for Fears skirts the has-been trap impressively,
translating years of experience into play-it-again, sophisticated
modern pop worth paying attention to.
